By Adwoba Addo-Boateng
An ePortfolio known as electronic portfolio is an
electronic resource that records, stores and archives artefacts of learning and
it provides reflection for an individual learner (University of Queensland,
2023)
It comprises of an individual's work, achievements, skills,
and reflections. Typically, it consists
of various digital artifacts like documents, images, videos, and links, which
are usually accompanied by annotations and reflections.
It can be used as a student showcase portfolio or it can be
used by students for academic use, it can be used by external supervisors for validation of a
school activity, it can also be used as work integrated learning and evidence
based assessment.
There are many advantages or benefits of using an Eportfolio.
First and foremost, it is a tool for showcasing one’s accomplishments owing to
the fact that Eportfolios allow individuals to showcase their work, skills, and
achievements in a dynamic and organized manner, which ultimately provides evidence
of their abilities to either potential employers or educational institutions.
Also, it allows the individual to digitally access
information anywhere at anytime which makes
sharing of Eportfolios feasible. Furthermore, when it comes
to reflection and self-assessment, EPortfolios provide a platform for
individuals to reflect on their learning experiences, growth, and progress. Individuals
can self-assess themselves which encourages a deeper understanding of their own
achievements and areas for improvement.
Also, when it comes to multimedia integration, Eportfolios
provide flexibility to include various multimedia elements like videos, images,
and audio recordings. This enables individuals to demonstrate their skills and
talents more effectively, enhancing the overall presentation of their work.
However, there are disadvantages associated with using Eportfolio,
one is technical constraints Creating and maintaining an Eportfolio can be a
challenge for individuals who are less technologically inclined or have limited
access to digital resources. Also, there are issues with privacy concerns. With
the storing of information stored online of which ePortfolios is no exemption.
There are inherent privacy risks associated with sharing personal and
professional information. And as such care
must be taken to protect sensitive data and ensure that proper security
measures are adhered to.
Moreover, building a comprehensive and meaningful
ePortfolio can be time-consuming. It requires careful selection and
organization of content, reflection, and regular updates. This therefore
requires a huge investment of time and effort.
Furthermore, as ePortfolios are customizable, there is no
universal standard for their design or structure. This lack of standardization
can make evaluating ePortfolios more challenging.
In conclusion, the advantages of ePortfolios outweigh the
disadvantages. It isa great way of showing one’s accomplishment anywhere,
anytime. Eportfolios has the potential to demonstrate personal and professional
growth and provides space for planning into the future asfar as professional
needs and experiences are concerned. However, individuals should take into
consideration their own unique circumstances and objectives before using ePortfolio.
